TOEFL stands for Test of English as a Foreign Language. It is a standardized test designed to measure the English language proficiency of non-native English speakers planning to enroll in English-speaking universities or colleges. The TOEFL test evaluates an individual’s ability to understand and use English at the university level.

This test assesses the four language skills: reading, listening, speaking, and writing. It’s widely accepted by universities and institutions in English-speaking countries, particularly in the United States, for admissions purposes.

The TOEFL test can be taken in two formats:

  • TOEFL iBT (Internet-Based Test): This is the most common format and is administered via the Internet. It includes all four sections (Reading, Listening, Speaking, Writing) and is conducted in a single session, taking around 3 to 4 hours to complete.
  • TOEFL PBT (Paper-Based Test): Offered in areas where the TOEFL iBT is not available, this format includes three sections (Listening, Structure and Written Expression, and Reading) along with a separate Test of Written English (TWE) for essay writing. The TOEFL PBT takes around 2.5 hours to complete.

What is the TOEFL Scholarship?

The ETS TOEFL scholarship, available annually, aims to assist students pursuing education abroad at universities or colleges listed in the TOEFL Directory, which includes over 8,750 institutions across 120+ countries. Students who have completed the TOEFL test and obtained their scores are eligible to apply for the scholarship. Additionally, upon selecting TOEFL test dates in Nepal, students can locate the nearest exam center through the ETS TOEFL website.
